Uriah’s POV
“So you climbed the Ferris wheel, huh?” I say, tripping across the car to reach Tris. I sit next to her, and Marlene sits next to me.
“Yes.” She says it innocently, like she’s a small little girl, but I know better.
“Pretty smart of you,” Marlene says. “Like…Erudite smart. I’m Marlene.”
“Tris.” She says, fighting a smile.
“Yeah, I know who you are. The first tends to stick in your head.”
I take out one of the paintballs from gun, desperate to enter the conversation with Marlene. I squeeze it between my fingers, and the train lurches to the side. I fall against Tris, pinching the pink paintball. It sprays a stream of foul-smelling paint on her face.
Marlene giggles loudly, so it was worth it to embarrass myself in front of her to make her laugh. Tris wipes off the paint from her face and wipes it on my cheek. I can smell it wandering through the car.
“Ew!” I yell, and squeeze the paint again, but at the wrong angle. It sprays into my mouth, and I can taste the bitter taste.
I make sure to exaggerate my reaction by coughing and gagging, trying to make Marlene laugh some more. I scrape my tongue with my fingertips while Marlene and Tris laugh, and soon, so do I.
